Lubo Tam: In my element
"In my element" highlights the importance of reconnecting with the natural elements and listening to our bodily system. In today's society, we have become disconnected from the natural ecosystem, leading to concerns about our ability to self-examine and detect signs of ill health. By learning about changes in weather, seasons, and cycles, we can align our body with the larger environment and promote harmony. Being aware of which element our body requires and incorporating it into our medicine or nutrition amplifies our healing potential. Rather than immediately reaching for medication, understanding the underlying basis of symptoms and addressing them through natural means, such as fresh air or clean water, can bring about gradual relief. It is crucial to recognize that the body is a single entity, and the influence of one part can impact other parts, necessitating mindfulness and balance in our approach to healing.

The ability to gauge the state of our bodily system, is an ability that appears to be neglected so much in the current state of society. We have disconnected and detached so much from our interaction with the natural ecosystem, both by design and choice. These conditions, if it remain unaltered, will continue to raise concern. Concern should be expressed towards our ability to self-examine or palpate whether our body is about to enter a state of ill health, due to our being disconnected from the elements. Learning about changes in the weather, seasons, and cycles allows us to use this changing condition to amplify and get our body in harmony with the larger environment. We all know that oxygen and the air we breathe are important parts of our lives. Now, however, our lifestyle keeps us indoors for such a lengthy period that most often we don’t get sufficient intake. Some weeks, I get bogged down by personal and/or work commitments. Where I spend extended time indoors, my movement is less lively, and my thought processing feels congested. So, using the elements to self-regulate and heal is such an important lesson to learn or study for our health.

Knowing which element your body requires takes time to learn. Where you can accompany the right element with your medicine or your nutrition, you have amplified healing potential. Let’s say you are having some sort of migraine. Often, our first reaction nowadays is to take medication to get rid of the pain. This approach may have a masking effect. However, if you can try to understand the basis of that symptom, sometimes it may be because of lack of fluid or oxygen in the body. Where that is the case, getting outside to get air or filling up with clean freshwater could lead to slight reduction of the symptoms naturally. Its affect may not be as rapid as a medication that you may take, but in some cases, it’s also important to take into consideration how our body excretes substances that we consume. Where those inputs remain in the system for a certain period of time, we have to think about the affects it have on the body. Sometimes we may find that even though it heals one part of the body, it also creates an imbalance in another part. So, becoming mindful of how each part will influence another is critical. Even though we have managed to divide the body into various systems, we still must remember that it is a single entity.
