Lubo Tam: Time of Action
"Time of Action" explores the transformative power of dedicating time to a specific action or task. The author observes how the body and mind automatically switch gears when the period of action is near, leading to increased focus and productivity. The chapter emphasizes the importance of preparation and behavior before engaging in any work. The author shares their own experience with writing and how creating a set of actions and rituals, such as setting up the workspace and dedicating a specific time each day, has helped them develop a productive writing habit. The chapter also highlights the significance of aligning preparation and actions with larger goals and dreams. By reinforcing smaller tasks and dedicating focused time to them, individuals can make steady progress towards their ambitions. The key takeaway is that the smaller, consistent actions are as crucial as the larger aspirations, and through mindful dedication of time, one can achieve meaningful results in any endeavor.

Something magical happens when you dedicate a certain amount of your time to a specific action. Your body and mind seem to automatically start to switch gears and prepare when the period of action or work is nearing. I have noticed this with my writing and other works, it’s like if you do something long enough, your body creates these systems and processes. I noticed it this morning when I was exploring a subject to cover. My mind clicked into action quickly. In terms of writing for this project, I don’t always have a specific subject line that I feel I need to cover. However, I have a set of actions that I take regardless of whether I have a subject matter or not. First, I get my laptop fully charged the night before, which I bring into the bedroom with me. Then, first thing in the morning, I grab a pillow for my back rest and another to support the laptop on my lap. Then I turn on the computer, set my timer to 30 minutes, and pretty much get to work from there. That process may change as I proceed through the chapters, but currently it’s been activating my thoughts, and I am now a few weeks into the specified habit.

So, I am realising the ‘work’ is only part of the equation; the behaviour and the preparation prior to that are all part of the requirement. There are times when we have certain ambitions, goals, or dreams that we want to accomplish in life. If we, however, look at the basis of our action, it may have nothing to do with what we want to achieve. Our preparation is not in alignment with the larger goal, and we end up being frustrated and discouraged because we are not achieving our goals and dreams. The smaller tasks are as important as the larger ambitions and dreams, and I am realising this with each word, each sentence, each paragraph, and each page. They are building into a body of work, but it started off by me taking the initial step and then reinforcing that into my life until that time specifically belongs to that action. Reinforcing was me simply putting a timer on 3 days of the week and saying for 30 minutes, I am dedicating it to these tasks. It didn’t matter how much I wrote on that day. It matters that for that specific space, I am only allowing my thoughts and actions to occupy that space without tending to other distractions.
